Foștii și actualii șefi de stat și guvern din lume au transmis mesaje după moartea fostului președinte al URSS. Sicriul cu Mihail Gorbaciov este depus în Sala Coloanelor a Casei Sindicatelor din Moscova, unde a fost depus şi trupul lui Stalin la moartea acestuia în anul 1953, iar mai înainte şi fondatorul URSS, Vladimir Ilici Lenin. Va fi înmormântat alături de soţia sa, Raisa, decedată în anul 1999.

Preşedinta Comisiei Europene, Ursula von der Leyen, i-a adus un omagiu lui Mihail Gorbaciov declarând că a fost „un lider demn de încredere şi respectat care a jucat un rol crucial în încheierea Războiului Rece şi în căderea Cortinei de Fier. El a deschis calea către o Europă liberă. Este o moştenire pe care nu o vom uita. RIP. Mihail Gorbaciov”, a scris von der Leyen pe Twitter, potrivit Agerpres.

Secretarul general al ONU Antonio Guterres şi-a exprimat „profunda tristeţe” după moartea lui Mihail Gorbaciov, aducând un omagiu „unui om de stat unic, care a schimbat cursul istoriei. A făcut mai mult decât oricine altcineva pentru a obține în mod paşnic sfârşitul Războiului Rece. (…) lumea a pierdut un mare lider mondial, dedicat multilateralismului şi apărător neobosit al păcii”. Premierul britanic Boris Johnson a salutat „curajul şi integritatea” ultimului lider al URSS, spunând că „angajamentul său neobosit” a fost un „exemplu” în contextul invaziei ruse din Ucraina. „Sunt întristat să aflu de moartea lui Gorbaciov.

Întotdeauna am admirat curajul şi integritatea de care a dat dovadă pentru a pune capăt Războiului Rece. În momentul agresiunii lui (Vladimir) Putin în Ucraina, angajamentul său neobosit de a deschide societatea sovietică rămâne un exemplu pentru noi toţi”, a scris și Boris Johnson pe Twitter.
La rândul său, preşedintele francez Emmanuel Macron i-a mulțumit pentru „angajamentul său faţă de pacea în Europa”: „om al păcii, ale cărui alegeri au deschis o cale către libertate pentru ruşi. Angajamentul său pentru pacea în Europa a schimbat istoria noastră comună”.
Un lider rar
Preşedintele american Joe Biden i-a adus un omagiu, numindu-l un „lider rar”. Acţiunile sale au fost cele ale unui lider cu suficientă „imaginaţie pentru a vedea că un alt viitor este posibil şi curajul de a-şi risca întreaga carieră pentru a-l atinge.

„Profundele condoleanţe” și le-a exprimat și Vladimir Putin, potrivit purtătorului de cuvânt al Kremlinului, Dmitri Peskov. „Vladimir Putin îşi exprimă profundele condoleanţe în urma morţii lui Mihail Gorbaciov, urmând a trimite dimineaţă o telegramă de condoleanţe familiei şi rudelor” a mai sus Peskov.
